This spring I spent time once a week pulling cards from Kim Krans’s Alchemy Deck. The Spring brought many cards about beginnings and then came Summer, which brought me more cards about … beginnings. It really felt like I was supposed to start something, but what it was, I didn’t know… until the last few weeks.
My recent pulls and references seem to revolve around one big thing – personal sovereignty.
It really started with a reading in which I asked where I am, where I’m going, and how will I get there. It was the most gorgeous reading I’ve ever had.
Where I am – Spring – I’m at a blossoming, a becoming and it’s time for generation. This is the “what’s next” card and I’m finally starting the process all of those earlier beginnings were harkening to.
Where I’m going – Scintillae – This is sparks of light, hope, exhilaration. I’m reading this card as childlike wonder and awe. Those aren’t things that I experience very often and I would love to be able to get there. I will be able to get to a place where I can be embodied and feel joyous. (STARS)
How I’ll get there – Venus – I’ll get there through love. Seeking love, beauty, and pleasure will help me get back to my body and experience awe. I’m going to get physical in multiple ways – not just working my body, but playing music and creating with my hands. I’ve been on a self-love journey with my group at Sacred Circle for years now and I’m reaping the benefits of having come to care for myself better, regulating better, and engaging with my creative side. This is the way.
So where’s the personal sovereignty, you ask? It started appearing almost immediately.
The Androgyne – a being a multiplicity and internal paradoxes. This card is about leaning into who you actually are with all of its contradictions and non-binary forms. Who we are is much more nuanced than we usually think about and the first step to sovereignty is knowing the self.
Chiron – a figure who goes through great pain, but uses it to transform himself in to a teacher and healer of such pains. This card, too, is about paradoxes – both where we’ve been and where we want to go. Both the pain and the healing. Truly holding space for ourselves comes with accepting the wound and the scar. The second step to sovereignty is accepting the self.
Mercury – a god of messages and tricky situations. This card asks the reader to pay attention to the precise language of messages so they can use shrewd discernment to find the truths and the lies. It’s about waiting for the truth to emerge to make the right choice or take the right path. The third step to sovereignty is taking informed action.
Sal Sapiente – the wise, gritty salt of the earth. This card asks the reader to find, accumulate, and rely upon the granules of wisdom – from others and the self. “Everything you are going through will be of use down the line.” At this time, in this progression of readings, the sal sapiente I’m looking for is in myself. I need to trust my internal wisdom, my intuition. The fourth step to sovereignty is owning the knowledge and the power, and trusting the decisions.
Inanna came next – the lady of the heavens looking down upon the word and seeing it in unity – embodying the wisdom of sal sapiente and discernment of Mercury.
Finally, last night’s Sacred Circle brought me to the Empress – a divine feminine who brings abundance. She’s associated with Venus (…. so that came back). She wears a crown of stars and sits a throne, a scepter held lightly, but firmly in her hand. Three symbols of sovereignty and power worn and wielded gently and with confidence.
This year as I head into the cycle again, I’m going in more self-possessed; I’m going in with open eyes; I’m going in with my own intuition leading me to the best choices for me.
I’ve already come up against situations and advice that have pushed me to overfunction for others, to disrespect others’ positions by taking over, to take ownership of the behavior of others. None of these things belong to me, nor do they serve me.
This year, I intend to own my spaces and maintain my boundaries. I will not overfunction for others, because that will deny them the lessons and opportunities they need. It will also deny me the energy I need for my own adventures. This year is for wearing my authority lightly and overseeing my own realms for my own purposes.
